We applaud Duke University leaders for indefinitely suspending plans to allow Duke Energy to build a climate-wrecking fracked gas power plant on campus.
The decision was clearly a result of continuing opposition by people connected to the university (including alums) along with NC WARN, members of the community and other nonprofits.
We are encouraged by the University’s stated commitment to help solve the long-running challenge to convert hog waste into usable clean energy, but caution that the effort must also relieve the immeasurable negative impacts on neighbors of the thousands of industrial hog operations across eastern North Carolina.
