High-level Nuclear Waste a Permanent Risk in North Carolina:

Since 1998, NC WARN, local governments and citizen groups have been challenging Progress Energy (formerly CP&L) to reduce risks at its three nuclear power plants in the Carolinas.

We are urging the elimination of high-density cooling pools at each plant.  Federal and independent studies confirm that loss of cooling water would likely lead to an uncontrollable nuclear fire that could release very large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere.

Top experts and NC WARN support proven methods of waste management (see diagrams) at each plant would that greatly reduce the risk to the public and environment: low-density pools, along with hardened, dispersed dry storage for all waste over five years old.

High-level nuclear waste will be stored at North Carolina nuclear plants for decades.  NC WARN is advocating safer storage methods that reduce the risk of a catastrophic fire from accident or attack.  The Shearon Harris plant in Wake County has the nation's largest waste cooling pools.  Also, a series of reactor emergencies have made Harris one of the nation's most troubled nuclear plants.
